I fell in love last night. With this sake --> http://www.urbansake.com/sake/masumi-arabashiri-junmai-ginjo-nama-genshu.html

My friend got the bottle in NYC and I'm willing to drive, but would like to know if there are any good sake retailers in the Boston area? Downtown wine and spirits in Davis Square has a decent selection, but do connoisseurs know of other places to seek out a good sake selection?

btw, the linked urbansake site is a lot of fun too.

Coolidge Corner Wine and Spirits has a small but excellent selection of sakes, including several high-end ones you won't see elsewhere around here. Wine Press at St. Mary's on Beacon Street also has a few, and otherwise I tend to hit up Blanchards. Never seen anything like a NY selection here (sigh), and do not recall seeing the Masumi Arabahiri at any of those places. The tasting notes make it sound great though, now I want some too!

in terms of flavor profile, the closest that I've found locally to nama-sakes like the Masumi is Gekeikkan Horin daiginjo, although that is pricier and still pales by comparison in flavor. Blanchards used to carry Seiryo Kijoshu but I haven't seen it there for a while.

Love the Horin Daiginjo, it was my first high-end and would be my daily tipple if I could afford it. At about $37 (? it's been a while, have been trying to sample as many others as possible since then) a pretty good deal for one of that quality. Beautiful packaging too.

i think now they do smaller bottles of it too iirc...if you like the Horin, try the Gekkakow vintage daiginjo sometime, strictly a splurge item but for those special occasions...O-Ya really needs to expand their sake selection (especially by the glass) to include stuff like this imo

Reliable Market in Union Square, Somerville has a very interesting selection. I bought one there once with real gold leaf flakes in it for a special occasion.

In Cambridge, at Fresh Pond Plaza (or whatever it's called--where Whole Foods is), the package store at the far end of the strip mall has a surprisingly good selection. Or did last year...
