The Grilled CheeseTruck
The Grilled Cheese Truck finally rolled last night to The Brig in Venice. The results were mixed. The website showed an 8 pm start time and the twitter said 8:30, the twitter was right. I was there before 8. Prices on the printed menu and the board didn't match so they fixed the board. It was there first night, bound to be a few problems.
They finally opened up a little after 8:30 and a few samples came out. The Pumpkin and Tomato soups were both very good. The Pumpkin slightly sweet and the Tomato perfect to go with Grilled Cheese. Some tater tots that while hot and crispy had a slightly odd taste, almost fishy. Then a sample of the Grilled Mac n Cheese with BBQ Pork. Pretty good but I'm not big on Pork. BTW the Carmelized Onions and BBQ Pork are mixed, you can't get one without the other, too bad!! Also it supposed top be made with Sharp Cheddar so I was expecting a stonger flavor.
One of the reasons we were getting so many samples is that they were having trouble with the Grill. Finally they announced that they would have to wait for a mechanic because the Grill wasn't getting hot enough. They were very apolegetic and kept bringing us soup to help us stay warm. Despite the fact that I was 5th in line it was 10pm before I got out of there with my grilled cheese.
I had the plain Mac N Cheese melt. It was good but not great, most of all it wasn't hot or melty enough. With the really late start they probably were cooking too fast. The Desert Melt was very odd. I probably should have skipped the roasted banana puree component. Next time I'll try it with just Nutella and Marshmellow and see if it is better. Also not hot enough.
I really want to like this, it seems like such a great idea, so I'll give them a few weeks to work out the kinks and try again. They also gave us a half price ticket for our next visit to the truck. Better luck next time!!!

i went to their Pre Melt event 2 weeks ago. i really got the feeling that it is going to be awhile until they get their act together. it was a bit disorganized and the people making and putting out the food seemed confused. only one person working the food seemed to have experience and he was hustling.
that being said, i sampled 4 of their sandwiches and loved each one. the basic grilled cheese with cheddar was absolute perfection. the kind of grilled cheese that you dream about. buttery and cheesy and gooey. mine was cooked to perfection.
the caprese one was surprisingly good. i am not a fan of basil, but the basil wasn't overpowering. the sandwich had an almost sweet taste, but it was enjoyable.
the mac and cheese with bbq pork was awesome. a little rich, not the kind of thing you want to eat everyday. but the pork had a great flavor and the mac and cheese had a good consistency. not soupy and drippy, but just solid enough to be in the sandwich.
the dessert one had marshmellow fluff, bananas and Nutella. again, very tasty. not sickeningly sweet.
i didn't like the tomato soup, though. it tasted like pasta sauce to me. maybe i am being trashy, but with a grilled cheese, i really just like good ol' Campbell's tomato. or maybe Trader Joe's Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato if i am feeling fancy.
the food was top notch, but it has taken so long to get this truck going, so many false starts and has been so disorganized that i am going to wait at least a month or two before i try to track it down again.

This truck is the most over hyped truck I have seen. they have had more press than trucks that have been on the street for 6 months. This truck better be amazing or else it will be a big let down! Like when a friend takes you to see a comedien and tells you for a whole week leading up to the show how funny this guy is and how you are gonna die laughing. Your expectations ar so high and then nothing lives up to them. I can not wait to try them, but my expectaions are so, so HIGH!

Thanks for the review!! We have been eagerly awaiting the truck ourselves, but we kinda had a feeling to hold off when we saw them stranded on the side of the road this weekend with the engine compartment open! So the grill thing does not surprise me... I hope they get it fixed soon, there are lots of people out there not quite so understanding...
