Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Need an inexpensive SF restaurant idea for a work party (budget in mind) for about 150 people.

I am looking into options for a holiday party for my office (about 150 people total) and trying to think of options that can hold a group this large. Looking for something fun and casual but not break the bank. Taylor's Refresher (if it weren't outdoors) or maybe Lulu's are my only thoughts to date. Preference is near downtown but open to ideas. Appreciate any thoughts.

  1. Maybe upstairs at Gordon Biersch? Max there is 200.

    Lulu's is not inexpensive.

Has Gordon Biersch improved? I lived two blocks away for a lobg while and it was awful. I

What is the budget. Does it need to be downtown?

Downtown preferable for convenience. Budget is around $50 to $75 per head and there are about 150 people.

I wonder if Burger Bar would close down for a party that size? Mixed reviews on the burgers so far, but I had a decent experience and the milkshake bar would certainly be a hit at a holiday party. And for $50-75 a head everyone could be having foie gras burgers and a few cocktails/beers/shakes to boot.

Might also look into Thirsty Bear, upstairs.

      1. Not knowing the median age of your company or any other details. A great general restaurant that is budget minded and will hold a large crowd is Bocce Café. The space is large and if you do it relatively early you can have the whole place to yourself. They can serve large trays of food and keep the cost down; if you are looking to add wine, beer to your event they have a reasonable selection that won’t break the bank. If you have a young crowd they will appreciate the proximity to NorthBeach nightlife so they can have some good stories for the New Year. http://boccecafe.com/

        1. What about Tres Agaves? They have a huge private room in the back and it comes with its own bar. I know they don't charge a room fee, which is helpful when you're on a budget.

          1. Two's back room can hold 150. $5000 minimum, no room charge.

The food at Tres Agaves is hit-and-miss at best. For $50-75 a head you should be able to do better.

            1. I've always had good luck with a Chinese banquet. Its quite a treat for those who have never been to one.

              1. How about The Cigar Bar & Grill?

It's a cool spot and i've been to parties there and like the vibe. i can't remember a ton about the food since i'm usually 3 drinks in before sampling the cuisine...seems to have good reviews and the prices are reasonable.

                1. re: vis

What are the chances that none of the 150 people would be bothered by cigar smoke?

                  1. re: Robert Lauriston

i actually don't think you can smoke inside...there's a patio where the cigar smoking is happening....at that number you may be renting the entire place...
