Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

Just like Apizz but not Apizz

Hey hounders

Planning a dinner for 6 and would love to go to Apizz but another couple was just there last wknd so it's off the list. But that food--delicious, genuine and warm-hearted italian--and vibe--intimate and warm--is just what we are looking for.

Lived and chowed all over nyc for years--are we looking for dell'anima, Il Buco, Lavagna, Piccolo Angolo, Crispo, Lupa, I Coppi, Pepolino...or some other place?

Where do we meet to eat?

Thanks for your collective knowledge in advance.

  1. I have never been to Apizz, but Crispo, Lupa and Pepolino are among my favorites. I also really like Locanda Verde. Pepolino is the most expensive of all these, but is also quieter and more relaxing if that matters. Their gnocchi are out of this world. Crispo and Locanda Verde tend to serve the food too quickly, with main courses arriving at the very second appetizers are cleared, but the food is delicious and prices very reasonable. Lupa is great but getting that reservation is a challenge.

I hear Locanda Verde is a mad house. true?

i went to locanda verde on a rainy monday night a few weeks back. it was crowded but i wouldn't call it a mad house. i enjoyed the restaurant and the food was yummy. they were even nice to change our table from the front area to the back area. i ended up sittting 2 tables from mario batali. the restaurant is bustling but not a mad house.

No. It can be a little loud (Crispo can also), but not so much that you can't hear your own conversation without yelling.

      2. Peasant might suit you.

Cool, thanks. Anyone have thoughts on Il Buco?

We were treated very rudely at today Peasant. I am very sad about it. We just ate and we were asked to move to the bar because they were "backed up for tables". We were there barely 1hour and 50 minutes (3 people), just received our check back and they asked us to leave. This is not the way you treat the clientele. We (me, my fellow newyorker and my friend who was visiting) will definitely not come back.
