Took the day off for errands on Tues. and met friends at City Girl Cafe in Inman Sq., my first time. What a tiny place, good thing we were there at 2PM past the lunch rush. Had a nice turkey, prosciutto, cheese pressed panini which I asked to be on foccacia instead of a baguette. Large sandwich with a bag of Cape Cod chips for about $7. Friend's salad was beautiful, egg salad looked good as did another table's pizza. Seems like an odd place to have a full dinner service but they've been dong that for a while now.

Fri. I finally made it to the after work special at KO Prime where they serve bar bites for $5 from 5-7 and 9-11. The prime rib sandwich was very good, 4 little pieces nicely grilled, good flavor. Wasn't thrilled with the other stuff we got. Steak taco was okay but kind of soggy, velveeta fries would be bettr without velveeta and sour cream on top making them all gloppy. Fried calamari were okay but the fry job could have been a little better. Decent glass of pinot grigio for $5, friend stuck with PBR and they had a $5 cocktail too. The bar area was quite crowded (dining room was fairly busy too) and it was a fun time but the prime rib is the only thing I'd go back for.

I'd seen the ads for Fresh Catch in Mansfield (and other suburban locations) on the food shows and really wanted to try it so combined that with a trip to the Wrentham Outlets. I struck out on both fronts. Sat at the bar at Fresh Catch about 1:30 and saw they had a lobster salad BLT special ($12) which sounded good. People next to me got various sushi specials that they seemed happy with but not so lucky with my order. Fries were limp as anything, the lobster salad seemed like that pre fab style (even tho there's a fish store next door), got some undone pieces of bacon and big hunks of iceberg lettuce didn't add anything. Cole slaw was okay and it was a lot of lobster salad (took half home), but a bit of a bummer.

Friend wanted to go to a low key place where they'd also be showing the Pittsburgh game so met him at the Thirsty Scholar which is a good spot for Sun. football. They had half the TV's with the Pats and half with various other games, lucky for us one side had the Pats and Steelers next to each other and we were the only ones watching those (also 49'ers vs Houston and Packers vs. whoever). For $7 I got an excellent peppercorn turkey and bacon sandwich with spicy mayo on cranberry walnut bread with fries. It was pretty "real" turkey, piled high with a little kick, good bread, okay fries, I was happy. He just got Newcastle and both teams won. Good place to keep in mine for mellow football watching altho I wish they had some brunch items.

Thanks for the post on City Girl - had a fine brunch there last weekend - an egg sandwich on a baguette and a small salad - both very nice and cheap - the highlight was the punch (alcoholic) which was a combo of sweet vermouth, citrus and prosecco, iirc. Really nice drink. The pizza fresh there is excellent. They recently remodeled to be less cafe and more restaurant, i.e., the cooking area is now behind a wall. Thumbs up for me.

I had that punch there on Friday night. I thought it was fantastic. Also the fettucine and meatballs (my favorite meatballs in Boston so far). The house salad, too, was delicious as are all the salads I've tried. The only thing that didn't rock was the kale/white bean/sausage soup.

Game watching is the main reason I find myself over at the Scholar. For what it is, it's a fine place. Recently had that turkey sandwich ... I usually find hteir food to be pretty hit or miss, with a lean towards miss but I really liked it.
