Identify this Seaweed...

watch me eat Oct 25, 2009 04:57 PM

I was at a Chinese Buffet in Orlando the other night and tried some wonderful seaweed salad. It was so good I got seconds with my dessert!

I've only seen this type of seaweed a few times before and was wondering if someone can tell me what it's called? It's a dark purple color and served in thin strips. I'm sure there's a more descriptive name than 'purple seaweed.'

Thank you! I think that's it. Now that I googled hijiki, I now know the arsenic risks from eating too much of this stuff. Internet spoiled my fun!

Was it black, slightly tubular like stems in form, and did it have a slightly anise taste? That would be hijiki. But the picture looks more like something shredded, like konbu or some other type of seaweed. Hijiki is a very particular item that would be have to be reconstituted, seasoned, and mixed with other items to make it palatable. That's not hijiki.
