bulk yeast

autopi Oct 25, 2009 02:27 PM

quick search turned up nothing--is there a reliable source of bulk yeast in the cambridge/somerville/boston area? i know WF sometimes has it, and harvest coop sometimes has it, but it seems every time i go to those places they're out or not carrying it at the moment or something. anywhere i can for sure get some? i suppose i could order it online but that seems silly.

I don't know whether you want it in "bulk" because you want a lot, or because you want to purchase just a specific amount, but both Costco and BJ's sell 2 pound bags for about $3. At Costco you have to be a member, but BJ's will let you in to buy stuff if you ask for a "day pass", and they just charge you a 5% premium.

Costco sells Red Star active yeast. They don't have instant or rapid rise. The Whole Foods in Newtonville usually has the one-pound bags of SAF instant. Stores are beginning to stock up for the holiday baking season so I bet the odds are pretty good that you'll find it at Whole Foods these days.

I've seen bulk packages of SAF at BJs.

I think I saw the Red Star in bulk at Costco. Last time I bought a large package of yeast, I got SAF at Whole Foods.

the restaurant supply store called BMS Paper on Washington St in Jamaica Plain (not far from the Green St T stop) has red star yeast in one or two pound bags. More bulk than that, i can't help with.
