I'm a Northern California chowhound who is finding it more and more frustrating to have to weed through ALL the San Diego restaurant posts ( a good 85% of the California board) in order to find anything relating to other areas in California...... seriously, San Diego dominates this board discussion. Isn't it time to give it it's own board????

I want to clarify, lest our hardworking volunteer moderators take the blame for something they have no control over, that our hardworking volunteer moderators have no control over this.

They'd like more boards, we on the staff would like more board divisions, we recognize that many users would like more board divisions. Right now, that requires some technical work that hasn't made it to the top of our lengthy engineering queue, but we hope to make them happen.

There are many new boards we would like to see created, and we are very sympthetic to posters who would like to see regional boards subdivided (these are the home boards of some of us, too), but unfortunately, at the time being it is not on the table, for the reasons described here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/475963

I agree completely, we've been asking for this a long time. The explanation has come down to what to do with the archives, but why couldn't we have a new board anyways? We could leave the old SD posts in the California board, and put all the new ones in the SD board. What's the disadvantage here?

You know I've always wondered that.

The archive info from Austin wasn't moved from the Texas board when that was created.

That didn't happen with the few new International boards either.

Archive info from General Topics was never moved to Home Cooking, Chains or Cookware.

I would imagine that it's daunting to think about having two board where former San Diego posts could be found. One of them where the new and new - old posts go and one where only the old - old posts reside. How much of the mod's time do you suppose it would consume trying to herd the cats to the right board? What's infinity X's infinity to the 10th power? A googleplex would look like a small number along side that string of numerals.

Somehow old posts about San Diego are more important than making the
California board a positive thing for users.

It definitely helps, but I still scratch my head at some of the labels because half the time I still can't tell if they're Northcal or SoCal. It's hard to stress how unrelated most of the board posts are to most of the Californians visiting it, simply because said post is about a place 200-600 miles away.

It's way more daunting to have a board where you can't tell if half the posts and recommendations are within 600 miles of you. What about having old posts on the California board would be a problem that doesn't already exist anyways?

No herding is necessary at all, it would be no worse than it already is now. In fact, if mod time were even the issue I volunteer. The reality is, somebody simply doesn't think it's worth the time and fair enough, it's their site. This is just a suggestion that will make it more useful.

Maps are your friends. Real ones, not digital ones. Study a good state map and you'll already have a better idea if you want to open a thread about an area you're not familiar with (assuming the locale is in the title.) You'll know if it's 200, 300, or 600 miles away.

Much of the California board traffic is related to TravelChow. "Where do I eat along this highway or when I arrive in this city?" It's enjoyable to research trips being planned as well as planning trips around places to eat or new chow. I can't imagine using chowhound without a good map, on paper and in my head.

And about half of it is San Diego. This is exactly the point, the board has split personality syndrome.

I know plenty of places up and down the state. That doesn't change the fact that the board is impractical for a lot of people including myself. If you're here to tout maps, it's not really the issue.
