Dining in St. Simon's

Does anyone have any dining suggestions for St. Simon's? I especially appreciate ethnic foods, but will settle for exceptional Southern fare.

Thanks.

Barbara Jean's has outstanding low country cuisine for lunch and dinner in a casual atmosphere. Doug Harris' is good for breakfast, lunch or dinner in casual atmosphere.
J Mac's is very nice for dinner with good food, cold drinks and live entertainment. Beachcomber BBQ is very good. It's close to King and Prince Hotel. Crab Trap on S end of SSI in SS Village is nice and casual with good seafood. Fourt of May has outstanding country food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For ethnic you will have to venture to the main land and off of St Simons. Indigo Coastal Shanty has an ever changing menu that is generally caribean in nature, but Kate always mixes things up, like yester day I had a Singapore Sub, which was roasted pork with an orange/hoison glaze, slaw, radishes cillantro & a sri racha lime aioli. The Charlesto Saute with local shrimp, country ham, peppers, tomatoes & okra over grits is a winner also. The jerked fish tostadas are great too, She is the ex owner of Cargo & open for lunch tues-sat & dinner thurs-sat.

My wife and I have been to Barbara Jean's twice. She had the crabcake and said it was very good. It gets very busy at lunchtime so be prepared to wait.

Try Frederica House for the fried shrimp. The Crab Shack is a close second, but gets very busy. You can book a table at Frederica House but not at The Crab Shack. Stay away from Bennie's Red Barn. Some people like it and some don't. My wife wanted to go there wanting a really good steak. Well, they brought it but not medium well. It was pratically raw. When she sent it back they brought it back missing the filet!! They said it had fallen off in the coals!! She refused an offer of something else as she was not feeling very well after eating the nearly raw steak. The place does not have a normal menu, but someone tells you what they have and then they bring you a salad so saturated in vinagrette as to make the leaves limp!! The service is very slow, especially when they are busy. The place is very dark and has an almost dingy feel to it. If you want a decent steak and service either go to the Outback Steakhouse or somewhere else, where you even get a real menu.

You are SOL for ethnic on SSI. Los Arcos mexican and Tum Tim Thai on 341 near 95 in Brunswick are your best near by bets. Southern Soul is best southern / bbq on ssi. Best southern food in area is 1 hour north in Jessup at Jones Kitchen open only for lunch, there is a post around a month back with pictures. In Brunswick Nicks on 17 has bst fried chicken around, veggies are avg.

In terms of ethic foods, try Pho # 1, 5437 Altama Ave, Brunswick, GA (912) 262-1457‎. The place looks like a total dump but it is my favorite place to eat in Glynn County. It is Vietnamese. Get two orders of the A4 pork rolls and a bowl of chicken soup.

Tuptim Thai Restaurant , www.tuptim.net, 5448 New Jesup Hwy, Brunswick, GA 31523-1118 (912) 267-7230 has really, darn good Thai food.

You will not go wrong with either.

For good seafood, I love B & J's in Darien, Georgia on a Friday night. I have a hard and fast rule against buffets, but this place is crazy good.

Stay away from the Georgia Pig. You will read reviews about how good that place is. It is terrible. Right now, Southern Soul BBQ on St. Simons has the best BBQ.
