Comments on Commander's Jazz Brunch
Will the brunch at Commander's Palace provide us with a good enough idea of a meal there? It may be the only time of day we can squeeze it in. Also, any suggestions on what to order at the brunch?

Commander's is best for lunch and brunch. Reserve the garden room. Bloody Mary's are terrific. Don't miss the turtle soup or bread pudding souffle.

Perfect! Thanks so much for the info. I'm going to make my brunch reservation right now!

question on reserving the garden room -- is it possible to actually "reserve" a table in there? each time i ask to do so they tell me they were note my "request" but cannot promise anything. which i take to mean that its effectively first-come, first-serve, and/or if they need to put people there to fill up the house they will.
didnt get it on sunday, and they were 30 mins late seating us..no concessions made, either.

Really? They made the same noncomittal notation on my reservation request for the Garden Room and we were obliged this past Sunday. What time were you eating? And, did you see Nick Cage?

UE - how was the trip and where all did you go? A quick summary?

rez was for 1pm, seated at 1:30. yeah his family was sitting next to us.

I suspect we got a table in the Garden Room because of our early reservation. We left the restaurant shortly after 1.30; the Garden Room was at capacity.

Are the $.25 martinis available at the jazz brunch, or just during weekday lunches?
just during weekday lunches- we were at a jazz brunch the day after Xmas and sadly, no 25-cent martinis as far as I could see. I didn't ask though.

they also offer drinks or martinis of the day, not to be confused w/the .25 martinis...careful ordering your drinks.
I love the shrimp henican, oyster absinthe dome, bread pudding souffle and molten chocolate dessert.

Thanks, everyone. This has been most helpful.

I second the oyster absinthe dome.

Is Jazz Brunch offered on Sunday only, or Saturday as well?

Saturday and Sunday. We went on a Saturday.

Commander's Palace Jazz Brunch is only offer on Sunday. You must try the Sunday Jazz Brunch at Commander's Palace at least one time. Oyster absinthe done and the bread pudding souffle are my favovite.

Sorry, noradeirdre, roro1831 beat me to the punch, I too checked Commander's web site about Saturday's jazz brunch. Now I know that I can have the Jazz brunch on Saturdays too.

Now, is it the turtle soup here, or is that at Brigsten's? Or neither?

The Commander's turtle soup has been the Gold Standard among the commercially available ones for years. In my experience it has been spotty recently BUT it must be said that it is still good. Only once did I get a bowl that wass downright pasty and too salty. The stock used to be veal---it was sometimes beef but that is OK, it will work. Other versions insist on the turtle stock itself. Some people don;t like to know if it is turtle stock becuase the stuff stinks to highest heaven when you make it but I have had my greatests successes with the turtle stock versions. I've not made in it a long time though and am "rusty."

The current menu has white truffle scrambled eggs. They don't give provenance to Alba, per se, making a general reference to Italy. But white truffle season is, for all intents and purposes over. Anyone know if Brigsten's is the type of place prone to doctoring dishes with (white) truffle oil?

We were there Jan 1 and the two outstanding dishes were the (1) Smoked Duck & Foie Gras Gumbo - A rich and elegant winter gumbo with braised duck, mushrooms, roasted garlic, Tabasco and foie gras dark roux and the(2) Foie Gras Pain Perdu - Ponchatoula strawberries flambéed with brandy and caramelized brown sugar over milk punch French toast with whipped foie gras mousse, candied pecans and chicory coffee anglaise.

They served those both at brunch? Hmmm - rethinking the dinner reservation....

Yeah, my foie gras-lusty friend already marked her territory on that pain perdu.

What's the famous loaf bread they serve here? They also have it at Galatoire's and others.
