An Indian recommended Mumbai Palace on Lincoln to me as an alternative to Maharaja. Has anyone been there?

If it's the one on Lincoln and Guy, that was briefly called Buffet Oregano, it is not bad. They have a pretty good selection, and the food is nicely spiced. I found the veg options to be a bit better than the meat--which tasted like it had been sitting there for a while (which it obviously had been). This place has moved around a lot in the past few years. It used to be next to the Forum on St. Catherine, but I believe that building burned down. It was substantially fancier at that location, as it now looks a little like a space in transition. Also not bad for indian downtown is Thali which I believe is on the corner of St. Marc and St. Catherine--not buffet, but the portions are huge and very reasonably priced.

Ah - my brain didn't make the connection that this was the old Bombay Palace! I used to go there quite a bit when I worked nearby years ago (over a decade ago) and it had quite a decent lunch buffet, as far as buffets go. Haven't been there recently, though. Glad to hear it's still decent.

I tried Thali last night (as Chililala mentions above) and it was very good - my friend and I had a feast for $21 taxes included. You can choose three main dishes for your thali platter ($7 veg/$8 with meat) - I had dal, an egpplant-potato curry, and a spicy chicken curry. It comes with lots of rice, a small salad, and a nan fresh from the kitchen. We also shared a side of channa bhatura - chickpea curry and deep-fried bread. The bhatura (bread) was a bit overcooked and very greasy, but still, I will definitely go back - probably won't order the bhatura again, though.

Actually, now I'm a tad confused. I just did a search and Bombay Palace is showing at 1172 Rue Bishop - which is not Lincoln & Guy. Maybe we're talking about two different places. I Googled for and also checked Canada411 for Mumbai Palace in Montreal and couldn't find anything except this thread.

It was farther west, I believe between Chomedey and Lambert Closse on St. Cath. Then it moved south of St. Cath on Bishop, and finally here, to the Lincoln location.

I don't usually reply to posts but I've actually been to all 3.
Mumbai Palace on 1624 Lincoln is actually the old Bombay Palace that used to be on Bishop. I heard from the manager that they acquired the location when Buffet Oregano closed its doors.
.
Mumbai Palace: A HUGE improvement.. The thing I like about the food there is that it has this homemade taste to it, whereas the other Indian restaurants I've been to, such as Buffet Maharaja or Devi, their food to me, almost always tasted factory processed. I've been to Mumbai Palace for lunch and dinner on a few separate occasions and apparently they cook throughout the entire day to keep the buffet items fresh. I go back often for lunch because they offer a 10% student discount on top of the $8.95 all you can eat buffet.
I've been to a couple of student parties at the restaurant and the food and music was always terrific. I highly recommend going to Mumbai Palace.
