I want to give feedback as I got the recommendation from here. We were in Orvieto and had lunch at la Palomba yesterday, Tuesday October 20, 2009.

Went by around 10:30 to make a reservation for 1pm. Husband couldn't imagine this could be necessary, but as we made this reservation there were already 5 or 6 previous reservations for this time. Later, as we enjoyed our lunch from 1 till 3pm, several parties were turned down at the door. The place was packed to the last chair and we were the only non-Italians, I would even say 90% regulars/locals (we live in Rome and speak good Italian and so could catch the conversations around us).

From the first minute to the last all staff were very friendly and competent. The young woman with the short hair who served us (the daughter???) was very honest and open about the offerings (told us that the porcini are not fresh and the truffles not the best at the moment), as well as being perfectly capable of recommending and serving the wine in the right manner (we are both sommeliers).

We had an antipasto plate - cold cuts - that were good, but not great. Had 2 pasta specials (with wild boar sauce and with lamb sauce) - both very, very good. Had 2 secondi (we definitely ate too much!), the dove (not the wild version, palomba, but the piccione) in its own sauce and black olives; and bocconcini of wild boar. Both very good. Finished off with caffe. Paid a total of 88 euros, of which 35 Euros was the wine (a very good Sagrantino). We definitely ate too much and drank one of the top wines, you can definitely get out for less.

We loved the place - simple and very good food, nice atmosphere, just prices. The kind of trattoria that we miss in Rome (here we seem to find only either the very simple trattorie or the nicer ones where the prices are higher - not this in-between type of place which we enjoy a lot).
