Apologies for the short notice! My son is in that area at a conference for the week and it sounds like he's being let out for the evening. Does any nice spot come to mind? He and a colleague are both good eaters from Boston. Fine dining isn't necessary, I'm sure, but good food would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions that come mind!

Friends who spend time in the area like Vices Versa (216 rue Saint-Étienne, 618 665-6869). Table d'hôte runs $40-50, if I recall correctly. If your son is willing to drive a scenic 20 km upriver to Les Éboulements, Les Saveurs Oubliées (350 rang Saint-Godefroy, Route 363, 418 635-9888), a "country table" BYOB featuring local products, comes highly recommended.

A recent New York Times travel piece on the Charlevoix also has a couple of Malbaie reccos, specifically the renowned and pricey La Pinnsonnière (124 rue St-Raphaël, 800 387-4431) and far more casual Café Chez-Nous (1075 rue Richelieu, 418 665-3080).

Thanks very much, Carswell. I found Vices Versa this morning, and thought it sounded wonderful, but unfortunately they're closed on Wed. this time of year. I'll let him know about the rest. Cafe Chez Nous is fairly close by for them, I think, and it looks nice. What a gorgeous area!

It ended up being four of them, and they went to Chez Nous. The casual atmosphere was perfect since the conference was for rugged, outdoorsy folks! It turned out that their party was alone in the dining room from 7:30 to 9:30. Another group (of 10) from the conference turned up but were told the place was closed. I suspect the kitchen wasn't up for cooking for 10 at that hour! Anyway, my son said the food wasn't "exceptional" but certainly good and everybody enjoyed what they had and had a great time. I hope to get details once he gets home.

I sure do thank you for your help! Pat
