Kosher w/in walking distance of Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
We have an appointment there this Thursday. Is there anything kosher within walking distance suitable for lunch? We'll be taking the train there from New Jersey so walking distance or a short cab ride is necessary.
thanks.

The closest thing the is the U of P Hillel (yes, walking distance). Actually, I have a faint recollection that one of the meat places (Holyland?) has at times had a truck there.
I would also call the Greater Philadelphia Bikur Cholim (Mrs. Malkie Schwartz) 610-668-1183 and get some up-to-date advice.

I was also going to suggest the Kosher Dining Room of the University of Pennsylavnia, which may or may not be at Hillel. Mrs. Schwartz--see above, would probably know whether the U. of P Kosher Dining Room would meet your needs, and whether you need a reservation or not. And, waht the hours are, and exact address. Itwould not be continuous service: it is a dininghall, not a restaurant.

According to this link from the Hospital's website they have some frozen kosher food and also a list of local kosher restaurants at the Connelly Center (sp?) so i would try calling the Hospital directly to ask before you go.

The only thing Shamash shows in that area is the Cream & Sugar Coffee and Sweet Shop, at 4004 Spruce St (40th & Spruce). That's about a 15-minute walk, and I don't know what sort of lunch you can expect there; I've never been. The closest "real food" place is Mama's (18 S 20th St, between Market and Chestnut), which is more like a half-hour walk, especially with kids; the food is decent there, but you'll probably want to take a cab, or else take the trolley from 37th & Spruce to 19th & Market.

re: zsero
If it's any help, we loved the food at Mama's. Place is small though, but the guys at the counter were really friendly and helpful to a family with kids.
Maybe you're better off bringing some sandwiches and snacks from home, just in case your appt is running late or you don't get a chace to leave the hospital.
