Punjab Indian Restaurant - Midway, San Diego
Our team from Bangalore is out here for working sessions, and they tried a fairly new restaurant on Midway called Punjab. They raved about it, so I thought I'd post this. I hope to try it this week. It's at 3185 Midway Drive.

We went today, and I must say, the food is very, very good. They started us with papadum served with a spicy chutney (close to salsa in flavour and texture). I ordered the vegetable biryani, and my daughter had the tandoori mixed vegetable grill. Of course we had to have naan, of which they have several variations (many stuffed with vegetables, lamb, cheese, etc.) - we opted for plain and garlic - along with a side of raita. The biryani had cashews, almonds, and raisins, in addition to the vegetables and spices. The tandoori vegetables were perfectly grilled, and the spices used worked so well to enhance the flavour of the vegetables. The naan was divided into four good-sized pieces, and was so fresh. I could make a meal of it with no problem (I love me some bread!). We had leftovers, so we ordered more naan to go. Total bill for the two entrees, three orders of naan, raita and tea was $42.96. Totally worth every penny. A very nice touch: toothpicks and what I think was supari brought to your table with your bill.
This is one of those little gems in a strip mall that I would love to see become successful. With all the recommended Indian restaurants in San Diego located in or around Mira Mesa, this is a wonderful option for those who would rather not venture north or for those who just love Indian food. As stated earlier, I'm no expert when it comes to Indian food, but this is just really good food. Period. Give them a try.

Thanks for the rec, Phee! I think you hit it on the head with this:
"With all the recommended Indian restaurants in San Diego located in or around Mira Mesa, this is a wonderful option for those who would rather not venture north or for those who just love Indian food."
Many of the great Indian places in SD far from my home and, with the case of Punjabi Tandoor, takes a while to reach b/c having to slog on Miramar Rd. For me, at least, although it might be a little faster to reach it from Mira Mesa via Camino Ruiz.

Their comment: food was very good, very fresh, nice ambiance. The owners are apparently from Boston and have been in the business for some time. I just figured if these gentlemen (who are vegetarians, by the way) raved about this place, it must be pretty good. I'll see if I can get more detail regarding what they ate.

One of our coworkers went with them to Punjab last night, and she brought back the tab to show me what they ordered. Tandoori methi, bhindi masala, palak paneer, raita, and naan. She brought in half the tandoori methi (she said the portions were generous) and it smelled wonderful.
Mliew, I haven't been to either restaurant yet, and I wouldn't be a good judge since I haven't had a wide range of Indian cuisine. I just know our Bangalore team was thrilled to find this spot. I'm taking my daughter Sunday so we can check it out.
