Benjamin's Steakhouse...I will pass next time

Do you ever know as soon as you step into a place that it won't be up to your expectations?
Benjamin's Steakhouse was extremely noisy, dimly lit (and they would not furnish a little light to read the wine list); I could order the steak and sides with my eyes shut. Ribeye was great but the wedge salad was white lettuce with bland dressing and no color whatsoever...needs some bacon bits or chopped red pepper or something.

I know this thread is old, but I just ate at Benjamin's for the first time Friday night. Have to say that the food and service were exactly what I would want them to be. Bthe jumbo shrimp cocktail, filet (yes, I blasphemed and ordered a filet), and lobster tails were perfect, and the service pleasant and attentive. I'll definitely go back.

If the place was so dimly lit how come you could see the salad! Seriously though all steakhouses are dimly lit - it comes with the territory. I can't think of any steakhouse with terrifically bright lights, can anyone else?

i don't expect bright lights either but had a ridiculously hard time reading the menu one time at Strip House. Watched neighboring tables use a light on their keyring to read the menu. We asked to be moved to another table (that happened to be in an area with more lighting).

Ben Benson's, Spark's and Del Frisco come to mind as having adequate lighting.

As does the best steak house in NYC (not just Manhattan) Peter Lugars.
