Chinese/East Asian grocery in Whitby/Durham?

  • 6

Is there a Chinese or East Asian grocery in Whitby or elsewhere in Durham region? Can't seem to find one. I guess it's easy enough to go to T&T in Scarborough, but I would like to shop local if possible.

  1. I do not shop in Whitby but in Pickering there is a great Asian market. On Kingston Rd just west of Brock Rd there is a store called T Phat. It use to be a knob hill way way back when. I thnk they try to cater to a lot of different cultures, so there is a big mish mash of things, but youy should find all the basics there.

I wouldn't call T Phat "great" by any stretch, it always stinks of rotten fish (and it smelled that bad the first time we went, just 3 days after they opened!), and its selection pales in comparison to T&T. We only go to T Phat to save ourselves the time/distance if we just need a few items (can run in, grab it, and get out) but we make regular trips to T&T to stock up on non-perishable items and enjoy not having to gag while shopping :-(

Tex, I revisited T.Phat today and was pleasantly surprised. It has fresh paint outside and in, and new products. The Japanese line includes, a broad selection of soy, natto, seaweed, and miso which was lacking before, and not available at all in Pickering.
The smell is gone, although there is a bleach smell all over. I'll keep visiting, as they seem to be comparable to Soon Lee now, and were not before. If they keep the fish smell down in mid summer, I'll be a contented customer.

Sounds like they were getting ready for their annual health inspection? :-)

I know I was there 2 weeks ago and it still reeked... word of advice, don't bother with their in-house butcher shop. They had a special on steaks (rib-eyes if I recall) and these were so tough I'd say they were a few notches below U.S. Select.

As I said earlier, I do go there since I live in the area (rather than drive a bit out of the way to get to T&T).

Never bought beef or pork there; fish not especially good. Chicken parts for stock was fine. Hard goods OK. Still can't get over the bleach smell, but-they are trying harder.
T&T meats are fresher, Grade AA or even AAA for beef, and the same price, just further afield.

    2. The Soon Lee at Markham Rd. and Lawrence Ave. E. would be closer to you than either T&T locations in Scarborough.
