Downtown Providence?

I'm headed to Providence for the weekend and am staying downtown. Any recs for a casual late dinner tonight when I get into town?

You should post this on the New England board.

Depends a bit on what you're looking for and how casual. My first impulse is to say Thee Red Fez, which is downtown sort of near the river. It's fun, hip, reasonably priced and does very solid, if not life-changing, eclectic american food.

The bar at Local 121 is more in the heart of downtown, and a very nice room. It's been a while since I've eaten there, and in the past I've found the food well-intentioned, with extensive local sourcing, but ultimately lacking in execution. The bar is a bit "classier" than Red Fez--the full dining room is grand, and way too big for its britches.

And if you want really casual in a loud bar atmosphere, Jake's over in the Jewelry district serves the best buffalo wings I've had in Providence. Sort of a dark horse choice, but a decent spot for sure. A little walk from downtown proper.

Avoid the pizza places on Weybosset and Cuban Revolution like the plague.

Thanks so much for all of the recs. I think that Haven Bros is going to be too casual for this group (but I am bookmarking it for later), but I like the idea of the Red Fez or bar at 121. Thanks for the thoughts on where NOT to go as well. Cuban Revolution was actually on my list of curiosities.

Go to Luxe Burger its casual you wont get reamed on prices and its fun clean food. Haven Brothers is simply elegant

              "Simply elegant". I like that.

But I think that joke works better if you know what Haven Bros is.

I also think Luxe would be a good choice, even though I've not always been fond of Chow Fun's efforts.

I agree with you on Chow Fun but I think this time they hit it right bacause of the economy. Its a bit crazy there. Haven Bros. have not been there in many many years.

Also agree on Chow Fun in general. Luxe seems to be an anomaly.
