Last minute UES dinner....

My foodie girlfriend secured a sitter last minute for tonight and I'd like to treat her to a great gal dinner near her UES home (96th and Park area) or easily accessible to the 6 train in case of a kid emergency. I'm an LA resident (love Canele and Animal) so am finding myself overwhelmed in Manhattan food land and in need of guidance.

On the board, I've read good things about both Itzocan Bistro and Cafe D'Alsace. Could we get in to these places? We both like Thai, French, fusion but not Italian or burgers. Price wise, with wine, if we could keep it in the $50 pp that'd be a plus as well.

Any suggestions? And thanks in advance.

  1. Cafe d'Alsace would be an excellent choice. Mr. R. and I have been there a couple of times, and our daughter and son-in-law, who live very near the restaurant, go there quite often. Solidly-prepared food and lively ambiance. OpenTable is showing lots of availability for this evening.

I agree, and would also note that you can probably get into Itzocan as well, though it is worth calling to see if you need a reservation. Itzocan has excellent food, but not much in the way of ambiance, or a decent wine list (though you can BYOB - don't remember the corkage fee). Alsace, on the other hand, is very lively/bustling, though I sometimes find it a bit noisy.

Another favorite of mine in the area - 92nd & Madison - is Square Meal. I've posted a lot about it - very well done American food. You can also do BYOB there for a $2 corkage fee, and there is a good wine store at 95th & Madison.

Not anything noteworthy in terms of Thai, as far as I know.

I also highly recommend Cafe d"Alsace. I've been there a number of times, and have always enjoyed my dinners.

        1. Thanks for the tips and the information. Does Food & Drink ring any bells?

are you thinking of pure food and wine?

            2. Cafe D'Alsace fit the night perfectly. Thanks for everyone's help.
