Sydney eating adventures
We've been here a year and just now tried these places and I really enjoyed them. I'm sad to think we almost missed them. Would love to hear other suggestions of places that do whatever they do really well.
Gumshara - 25 Dixon St - WOW. this one bowl of tonkatsu ramen will fill you up for a whole day. And it is amazing and delicious and probably not something you are going to make at home. It seems to be all over the food blogs and the wait can be long, but really, wow.
Al Aseel - a cab driver said this is the best Lebanese food in Sydney, and I think he is right. It was a small public transit challenge, but I like trying to get to new places. Greenacre - it isn't a train station stop! Sydney does some wonderful Lebanese food. I also like Jasmin, which is at a train stop.
Jugemu Shimbashi - ok, when you see a mill in the window so that the flour can be ground fresh, that is a clue! Not only was the soba and the broth to die for, the show in the window of the kneading, rolling, cutting is well worth watching.
Black Star Pastry in Newtown - chocolate caramel tart with maldon salt. swoon.
Pasticceria Papa - ricotta cake. I can not get enough of this ricotta cake. I order it other places and it has never been as good as the one from this place out in Haberfield on the corner. public transit bus stops very close by. Also also good chocolate at Colfax and a fantastic cheese store, really you can spend $100 in about 3 stores in about 30 minutes and then stop at the better than average IGA for the rest of the dinner ingredients. Sometimes it is all about shopping! Not inexpensive, but it is good.
I also really like the 'pub food' at Botany View Hotel, but not typical pub food, done by Darley St Bistro.

One thing I haven't really found - late night desserts or late night cafes. Many cafes close at 4 pm. I guess people switch over to pubs. We are just starting to explore North Sydney.

If you're exploring North Sydney, it's worth a trip to To's (for laksa, or chicken rice, or anything with satay sauce)

Be mindful of their opening hours, though. This is only a lunch place, really, and is closed on Sundays

On your recommendation we headed to Jugemu Shimbashi last week.
Had a very good meal. The cold soba noodles with duck broth is worth the trip alone. A lovely umami style hit. The broth was a joy to slurp down.
The Okonomiyaki was not your normal stodgy mess and had a good range of flavour, though the garlic chips were in our eyes a mistake.
Coupled with the miso aubergine & tonkatsu it was a good trip into the range of Japanese food.
We will be back.
