Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

single female dining alone in Lower East Side -- suggestions?

Hi! I'm looking for a low-key, reasonably priced (< $35 for dinner + 1 drink + tip would be good) restaurant with decent food, comfortable atmosphere, casual-dress-appropriate, quiet-ish -- somewhere I can read a book, have some wine and not feel out of place dining alone. Preferably within safe walking distance of Orchard/Rivington. Favorites include sushi, new American, Italian, German. (Not so much: Indian, middle Eastern, African.) Any suggestions greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  1. Not sure if it's too far, but Cafe Katja may be exactly what you're looking for. They have a little bar where you could set up shop with your schnitzel and your book. It's about 50 ft south of Broome, on Orchard.

I highly recommend their liverwurst, pretzel, and/or reuben. Delicious and quite affordable, too. And the service is really warm and friendly.

    2. Little Giant. I've eaten alone at the bar there. It's very comfortable, and the food is excellent.

This looks great too... right next to the other one so maybe I can check out both. Thanks!!

Either would be a fine choice - I like Cafe Katja as well.

      2. I have eaten solo at Perbacco's bar. It only has 2 seats! It's been awhile so not sure how the food is these days.
