I know that someone has great onion rings that don't start as preformed and frozen tasteless hoops. Any ideas ? Casual stands preferred to formal places, as I may not want to order a steak in order to try the rings.

Zeke's Smokehouse makes fresh, crisp rings from big, sweet onions. Only available as an a la carte side ($4.95), but it's a big order. As long as you're there, have the excellent burger, too.

Off the top of my head, I know of three places in Pasadena alone where I'm quite happy with the onion rings.

Both locations of Tops Burgers serve up excellent rings. I think they were originally related, but aren't any longer. Nevertheless, I've been unable to detect any differences in the food (or menu, for that matter), between the two. I go to the one on the SW corner of Allen & Walnut 'cuz it's closer to me; but there's also a branch on Colorado just east of Rosemead.

Also in Pasadena is Connal's (see thread below discussing sandwiches). They have very good rings AND fries. Can't decide between the two? Get the "frings" combo, which is the best of both worlds, and a Vanilla Coke, and life is good.

Avocado Fries? I've been going to Connal's for more than 10 years, and I didn't even know that such a thing existed. Then again, it took me a couple of years to learn about the super-extensive shake menu, so maybe I'm just slow.

What I've noticed about the Hat's onion rings is the taste depends on the freshness of the oil being used.

I've had some onion rings from the Hat that were fried in oil that hasn't been used that much. They were great.

But other times the onion rings were cooked in oil that was well used and dirty. THe onion rings were just OK.
