Need recs for mid-priced good dinner near Stamford/Darien/New Canaan
We just moved to the area from the San Francisco area and are looking for a good place to celebrate my husband's birthday. Great ethnic food would work, as would places that offer lots of fresh seasonal options. Preferably, mid-ranged (whatever that means here!) in price. We don't need a fancy place, but the food has to be really good (living in San Francisco/Berkeley made us quite discriminating...). Any thoughts? Thanks, in advance.
EOS, on Summer Street in Stamford, is a Greek restaurant that I think will fit all of your criteria. Though not as seasonal as the places that sibeat recommended (and I would second all of those recommendations), their food is consistently fresh and it's a slightly lower price point than Napa and Schoolhouse.
I agree that EOS is very tasty...we stopped in for lunch a few weeks ago and enjoyed all of the plates that we shared. We had some dips, the flaming saganaki, grilled calamari, octopus and shrimp, a lamb kebob, a few other things. Definitely cheaper than the other places I mentioned, and good food.
Ms. Nasm, two pieces of advice come to mind after reading your OP (1) please send the attitude back to the West Coast and (2) you may want to finish that book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People" before your next post. Believe it or not, us FFD County hicks have discriminating tastes as well. Jfood thought Tony Bennett left his heart, not his discriminating taste in Frisco. We also learned as youngsters, not to slap the person in the face and then ask for advice. Most of us love it here and we're friendly, but not really too crazy about getting kicked in the shins. Just a bit of Jfood advice.
Now to help you out:
Silbeat, a very respected hound out here, hit the big 4. The first three have websites for you to check prices. "mid-ranged (whatever that means here!)", OK the other side of the face is duly slapped. What price range do you SF people consider mid-priced? That would be a helpful data point. The Silbeat list has entrees in the $25-$50 range. None would be considered ethnic, but American.
Forget Darien, it is a restaurant wasteland. Many will tell you about 1020, but jfood is in the minority and has it on the DNR list. One of the Coromandels is there but it is in a very uninviting strip mall and they also have a location in SONO (see below)
Stamford main restaurant epicenter is call the "T" which is the lower part of Summer St. It has lots of choices from Breweries to high-end. If you are looking for Latin, do a search for some of Adamclyde's posts, he is the resident expert and will guide you in STM and Port Chester. Also in the area are Indian, some Thais have been popping up, tapas, Asian fusion and a smattering of Italian.
The other spot to consider is South Norwalk ("SONO"). Along Washington St. there are plenty of choices.
New Canaan (Jfood's home town) has some great places ranging from sandwiches to Harvest Supper. Do a search on Jfood and New Canaan and you will find a review onprobably every place in town.
Give a little thought and refine what you are looking for and re-post. We'll help you find a good spot for you and hubby. Welcome to the neighborhood.
