The Bar Room at the Modern has beignets on their dessert menu, which are served with maple ice cream, a caramel dipping sauce, and a fruit marmalade (seems to be mango on the current menu). These come up often as the favorite beignets of many people, and they are among the best fancier donuts in NYC.

Odds on finding fresh are low. One could demand fresh or walk away. I wanted to mention another name for fried dough that is available in NYC. Caveat emptor as usual.
