Marigny Brasserie - rudderless

  • 3

after reviewing their website, last weekend we decided to walk to the nearby Marigny Brasserie for sunday jazz brunch. there were many items on the menu that sounded delicious, including the "Eggs Marigny" - fried green tomatoes, housemade crab cakes, poached eggs, artichoke remoulade, hollandaise. $16! unfortunately that wasnt on the real menu when we got there. nor were ANY of the other 5-6 things i had in mind. i asked the bartender what was up and she told me:

THEY LOST THEIR EXEC CHEF. AGAIN.

this is like the 3rd or 4th chef in a year. wtf? is the owner that difficult?

sadly the meal was terrible. seriously weak dishes...the hash browns potatoes were pale and flavorless, like theyd never seen a skillet before. everything blah. we sat at the bar but the bartenders neglected us, had to use smoke signals to a get drinks, etc.. too bad because they used to have some really good regular bartenders.

$3 mimosas & (stiff) bloodymarys were the only silver lining. but with so many options i dont think ill be going back for a long time.

  1. I was just thinking about this place, because I've never been there and every time I've gotten ready to try it, I've read or heard that there was a new chef again.

What restaurants have the good chefs from there gone to?

I had the same experience a few years back dining at the Grill Room at the Windsor Court. It was a sudden departure of their chef I'd found out later - the meal we had was miserable.

I wonder why restaurants don't just go dark until they find someone to replace the chef? I think the damage to a restaurants' reputation from a patron being served a bad meal is worse than just putting a sign on a door for a week saying "Closed for Vacation".

    2. Sadly, I too had a bad experience the last and only time I was there. I found the menu and its execution way too 'busy.' I think everything we ordered (group of 5) had foie gras in or on it. Now I love every form of liver, but it was excessive.

There was a softshell crab with a lime mango chutney or something equally off-kilter.

Rudderless is generous. Confused or careless are closer. Wish the place was good, bc I drink in that neighborhood quite a bit, and I'd like to like it.
