Good place for a nice bowl of stew?

Being that it's all rainy and cold, I'm craving a nice hot bowl of hearty stew. Trying to find something close to the Knox/Henderson area. Any ideas?

  1. Good question but a difficult one to answer. You might try L'Anestral. It's a mom & pop French provincial restaurant on Travis Street a block South of Knox at Travis walk.

Why would you think a French restaurant would be serving beef stew?

L'Ancestral is a white table cloth restaurant and their food maybe described bistro-like but I wouldn't consider it "mom & pop French" which sounds like they serve croque-monsieurs and a cup of soup.

The last time I ate at L'Anestral, the menu was very "French provincial". I had beef bourguignon. AKA, (French) beef stew. And, it WAS a mom and pop. Albeit, run by a senior aged mom and pop. My comments stand.

    2. It's been way too long since I've been here for anything period but the Dunston's on Lovers Lane serves a bowl of stew and cornbread. Last time I had it was way over 10 years ago (at lunch but I think it is available at dinner as well) but I remember enjoying it at the time. Not in the Knox/Henderson nabe but not that far away either.

I eat lunch at Dunston's often. Best to call to see which day the beef stew is on the menu.

      2. That's easy.. the Old Monk. They pour a decent pint, too.

Thanks for the suggestion everyone. Old Monk is where we decided on (since we can walk there from our house). Their bread pudding I have discovered is a little piece of heaven! Had a great evening there.

        2. Not exactly a stew but the Beef Noodle Soup at the Taiwanese restaurant Kings Noodles (Greenville and Polk) is great. I think it might even be called "Beef Stew Noodle Soup" and is definitely stew like in any event. It has carrots, baby bok choy and big chunks of tender beef and is very delicious and cheap. Also had a great cold cucumber "starter" there.
