[Providence] Fun Place to take the family after seeing "Wicked"?

Hi There!

Taking our 3 kids (13, 11 and 8) to see Wicked over Christmas week and would love to follow up the Sat. matinee with a nice fun family dinner that evening.

Can anyone recommend somewhere that would be "fun" for the kids and also taste delicious for us? We are pretty much open to anything.

    1. The two places that come to mind are fire + ice or dave and busters. Both at the Providence Place Mall, not too far from PPAC.

I second that recommendation. Eat dinner at Fire & Ice, then go upstairs in the Mall to Dave & Buster's: check them out at website if not familiar with All kids and even most adults love this place. Then finish up the day with a cone at the Ben & Jerry's in the food court (just a short escalator from D&B). I saw Wicked at PPAC last year or so with my daughter, and it was fantastic!

Dave & Busters is probably your best choice (very "family friendly"), though many families also enjoy "Cheesecake Factory" which is on the outside of the mall.

If you go in the opposite direction (behind the theater - heading south), there's also 'Stanley Burgers' which is very cheap, family friendly and 'fun'.

      2. I can't recommend strongly enough AGAINST Fire & Ice. It's awful, and a sanitation nightmare to boot.

I'd recommend Luxe Burger Bar. There's a build-your-own burger menu the kids might get a kick out of, as well as build-your-own mac & cheese. The nachos are fab, and they have decent fries & gorgonzola tater tots that I've heard are pretty tasty. The food is casual but delicious, and really reasonable prices. If you'd like a cocktail after the show, the bar is nicely done as well.

Fire & Ice is a HUGE NO!!!!! There isnt a worse place to eat in all of Providence than Fire & Ice. The place is DISGUSTING. The last time I ate there I seriously considered calling the health inspector. In addition it was over priced specifically for the low quality cuts of frozen meats and shelfish, there were serious sanitation issues, the service was bad, and the line for the buffet/grill was so long it made for a very long unpleasent evening.

Dave and Busters is kid friendly but the food is at the lower end in terms of chains.

Heard great things about Luxe, have not tried it yet.

Maybe Angelos on the Hill? Cheap, decent food, model train that drives around the main dining room....... i dont have kids so im at a bit of a loss......

Only other idea I have is going up to Thayer st, several good restaurants and alot to see.

I can't believe someone on a board about food recommended Fire and Ice. Not only is the food mushy and tasteless, it's filthy in there.

OP, I'm not a fan of the group that owns Luxe, but I think it'd be fun for kids.

            1. re: invinotheresverde

I totally agree on the group that owns Luxe. But I think they've finally done something right there. It's very bright inside as well; my husband and I have actually been planning to take our kids there because we think they'll love it.

          2. If you love your family KEEP AWAY from Fire and Ice. Dave abd Busters fried and more fried food. Luxe, and the new restaurant where next to the Capitol Grill the name escapes me maybe someone here knows looks The food preparation is very dangerous and has not been inspected at least since 2007 at Fire and Ice.

I mentioned Fire & Ice because it got good press when it first opened up, I've never been there, and after the reaction on this board I don't think I ever will. I have been to Dave & Buster's and it's a fun place for kids (and grownups), and the food is OK, kind of Applebee-ish.

              1. re: Chowzmeister

no problem Chow, In all honesty it stinks that F&I is so bad. It is a very interesting concept, just terribly executed. The place could be good but obviously suffers from poor management and "corporatization" of the food (cheaper quality, frozen, less prep all to save $$$)

Its especially sad because there isnt a mongolian bbq/wok anywhere near Providence that I am aware of.

              2. re: Frank Terranova

I just tried Luxe today and agree that it would be a good choice. I haven't yet tried Ardeo, the new Mediterranean place that's over there, but the menu looks good.

              3. There is no WAY your kids will have a better time at a burger joint over Dave & Buster's.
The foods not bad at all, and if they love games, it'll be a home run!

If you are looking for a place to play, go to Dave & Buster's. If you're looking for a place to eat, go to Luxe.

                  1. re: dagwood

Thank you everyone! Will look into Luxe I think.

Good choice for families with kids. Dont laugh but you might need reservations. My daughter wanted to go Saturday night nothing until at least 9:30 its that much fun.
