I went thru a rice krispie treat phase, and was most happy with butterscotch chips added in. SO delicious, and a nice change from chocolate.

Coconut is also very good. I'm also here to add that using real butter makes all the difference, please don't use margarine!

I do what you do, Caitlin. Make regular RC bars, with a gob of peanut butter stirred into the melted marshmallow/butter mixture before adding the cereal. Then I spread melted semisweet chocolate chips on top. Sometimes I add a few butterscotch chips either to the marshmallow mixture, or in with the chocolate topping.

I don't make them often though, because I find them all together too enticing to eat. Or to stop eating, to be precise.

I once made them with the black and orange M&Ms that come out this time of year, which people loved. (Popcorn balls are also good with M&Ms.) You have to wait to mix them in until the mixture has cooled a bit, which makes it a bit of a workout, but worth the trouble.

We use M&M baking bits (aka mini M&M's) and deliberately DON'T wait until the mixture has cooled to add them in. The heat causes the coloring to run slightly and you get a tie-dye effect. My kid loves the way they come out looking.

Also, unless you need to be kosher or vegetarian, don't use marshmallow creme. Use real marshmallows. The texture is much better with the real deal.
