Cafe Kabab is a new kabob carryout in Catonsville on Frederick Road in the plaza behind Friendly's (between Sugarbaker's and Chef Paolino's.) Unlike others in the area -- namely, Maiwand Kabob (Afghani) and Kabab Hut (Bangladeshi) -- this one is Pakistani-owned. Also unlike those, the menu is very simple with just 10 items: Kofta/Chicken/Beef/Lamb/Chappli/Bihari/Fish Kabab, Chicken Tikka, Vegetable Platter, and Fish Platter. Each item comes with naan, rice, a side of either chick peas or spinach, and a canned soda (Coca-Cola products.) Also included are a small side "salad" and a small container of the standard yogurt-based green chutney. Currently, they are giving $1 or $2 off purchases of $10 or $15, respectively.

Just tried the Bihari Kabab yesterday. We found it tender and nicely spiced. Naan is chewy, which can be good or bad depending on your preference. Our side was spinach and it was excellent. You must ask them to make the spinach very spicy or it will be bland. (I am unsure if they added spice to our Bihari Kabab or if it was their "standard" version.) The rice may be a little bit too al dente for some and was definitely the weakest part of the platter. The portion size seemed a little bit small, too. We are looking forward to trying their other menu items soon.

I tried Cafe Kabab yesterday. I got the Vegtable Platter, which consisted of two large potato patties, a spinach side, a channa masala/chickpea curry side, rice, naan, chutney and a soda. They gave me $1 off, which was nice.

The good: The folks were very friendly. The chickpeas, spinach and rice were all really good. Well spiced, fresh tasting. A good value.

Not so great: The potato pancakes were kind of bland. The naan was very doughy and biscuit-like. A matter of personal taste, I guess.

I will give it another try, maybe a chicken dish next time.
