Fried (fruit or meat) Pies?

okie Oct 5, 2009 07:48 AM

This is more of a southern delicacy but they can be delicious if fried correctly; i.e. the proper temperature of oil so the pies are light and flakey rather than soggy and greasy.

Other than the county fairs, are there any places in the area that serve them?

I've got a serious craving to satisfy!

On the recommendation of JeetJet (as I recall), I tried the fried blueberry burrito at a little donut shop on the west side of San Gabriel a few blocks north of Babita's, and it was pretty tasty. (I think they have them only on the weekends.) It's certainly not Southern -- I miss those real fried pies, too -- but if you close your eyes and sip a Dr. Pepper you might be able to relive pleasant memories.

You might try the Empanadas at Empenada's Place in Culver City. They are fried pies and if you can order the Minis which require a minimum they tend to be flakier than the regular sized.
