your favorite kitchen implement?

what's your favorite kitchen implement?

i want to buy a gift for a friend and i don't want it to be either something she already has or else too random and gimmicky. and not crazy expensive, either.

what do you recommend? what kitchen things (especially gifts) do you use over & over and what gathers dust in a cabinet?

thanks you guys!

All really good ideas. I have a really nice collander (£9 from Habitat, UK). Instead of those horrible metal ones, this one is some kind of tough plastic, and has a handle. It just makes sense to me!

I'd suggest getting her a set of Microplane Professional graters (fine, coarse, and extra coarse).

Great suggestion! I also love my wooden reamer, tongs in two sizes, silicone pastry brush, strainer, small and medium whisk, magnetic measuring spoons (have two sets and love them),measuring cups, silicone spatulas. A wonderful knife is a perfect gift. A Unicorn pepper mill (the very best) would make a fantastic gift even if she has another one, as soon as she uses it she will dump the other one!
