Anancy - Jamaican on Somerled

We decided to try one of the obscure places from my Entertainment book last night. Anancy caught my eye... Jamaican food, BYOB, and a coupon too!

Brittany, our waitress for the evening, welcomed us and we were seated immediately. A wonderful aroma permeated the premises. The decor is warm and homey, the service friendly and down-to-earth.

We started with an order of fired calamari served with aioli s and papaya salsa and an order of jerk chicken wings. Both were quite good. As my main, I ordered the oxtail with lima beans. Oxtail is one of my favorite meats, but also something I never cook for myself. This dish reminded me of the oxtail I had on Jamaica back in May. My dining companion ordered the rum basted ribs... the sauce was amazing... sweet yet tangy. Each main came with a choice of sides (garlic mashed potato for her, rice and peas for me), a couple of slices of plantain, and my personal pet-peeve in a restaurant... boiled (perhaps steamed) veggies. So, I guess the bland vegetables is my only complaint.

Prices were very inexpensive. Overall, a good meal... I would return. You can peruse the menu here: www.anancyrestaurant.com/menu.html

    1. The fresh sorrel and ginger beer is also good. I find Anancy good and filling; it is more of a restuarant than others in town. There are more inexpensive places, but well worth visit. Sometimes, though, service is prettyslow when there is one wait staff working there. (The cook was recruited from a top hotel in Jamaica through a competition).

        1. Ate here last night. I found it quite pleasant. Definitely more "upscale" higher quality, and wider selection than most Jamaican/Caribbean places. The prices are very reasonable, and the BYOW doesn't hurt either.

Overall, I'd say it's a great neighborhood resto. Kind of place that the locals should be encouraging.

            1. Check out the plaintain wrapped in bacon on the menu. I'm gonna have to make a trip here in the next few weeks. Looks really interesting.

I've had some very yummy things at Anancy, including the jerk chicken platter, the curry chicken, and the jerk chicken wrap... but the service can sometimes be super slow, and the sweet-potato fries have always come out cold.
