I grew up on Oahu, but have lived in Seattle for the past six years (sadly). I'm going home for the holidays, and taking a mini trip with my boyfriend, who's from Seattle, to Maui for his first time. I've only been to Maui a handful of times, and we usually stay with family -- Aunty does all the cooking. So besides Tasty Crust and Komoda's bakery, I haven't really had the chance to eat out in Maui.

We're going to be there for 3 days, right before New Year's... any suggestions? We're picky about fresh sushi / seafood, but other than that, we just really enjoy good food. We're staying in Kihei and Makawao... Help!

Check out Da Kitchen in Kihei, great teri chicken. Also Okazuya & Deli is excellent, great menu but out of the way in Lahaina. If you drive around a little that way, I'd stop but only a few tables, tiny place.

I did the exact same thing a month ago (except I've lived in SEA for 12 years). The two places we enjoyed the most on Maui were Mama's Fish House and Sansei (for sushi). We got lots of recs for Da Kitchen, but we actually didn't really think it was very good plate lunch or Hawaiian plate (the Chinese chicken salad was pretty tasty). If you happen to do the road to Hana, check out Ono Organic Farms (they have a website) for a smoothie drink (you have to get on a bike to power the blender!). Great fun. Also, FYI, Maui got its first Zippy's...

Where, on Maui, are you staying? Though smaller than the Island of Hawai`i (Big Island), there can be some major drives, all things considered.

Last Dec., I did a trip review, basically of the West Maui area, but there were exceptions. Reviews: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/598400

Hope something helps you.

Aloha,
