BLU, Montclair, NJ

I'm reading mixed reviews on this BYO place. Has anyone here been lately?
Thanks.

If the salmon tartare with smoked ice cream (yes, you just read that correctly) is available, GET. IT.
I'm not even a salmon fan and I love this dish! I've had it as part of the tasting menu.

Blu is in my top 5 of NJ restaurants. I remember the scallops and truffle risotto to be one of the best meals i've had all year. Awesome.

Blu is fine. Among Montclair BYOs, I personally prefer Fascino (Italian), Passione (French), and Culinariane, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with Blu - very reasonably priced, too.

Agree that Fascino is also worth the trip, but it's also a lot more expensive than Blu. And I have to respectfully disagree about Culinariane...went and really wasn't WOWed by the food or the service. Oh, wait--I did say WOW when we got the bill...

I get WOWed at Blu every time--and for a LOT less $! Seriously--I think the chef/owner of Blu (also of Next Door) is putting out phenomenally creative and delicious food for ridiculously inexpensive prices. Best bet--go to Blu and do the tasting menu, which at last check was running around $50pp for 4-5 courses. Fantastic food AND it's a bargain!

I'd love to know where you're reading recent 'mixed' reviews...Blu is a wonderful restaurant (okay, so it's my favorite in NJ); the food is fantastic and creative, and it's probably the best bargain in the tri-state area. My opinion is make a reservation (you'll need one), grab one of your favorite bottles of wine, and GO!

Agree 100%. My favorite restaurant by far in this state. Next Door is fantastic as well (same Chef, "next door" to Blu.)
