While you're at Russo's: Pumpkin Whoopie Pie!
I often think Russo's baked goods and pastries are fine, but not anything particularly special or delicious. My other half brought home a pair of pumpkin whoopie pies the other day, more out of curiosity than anything. Good LORD these were tasty! Huge (one is definitely enough for 2 to share as a hefty dessert), perfectly spiced pumpkin cakes with a cream cheese filling. Decadent, for sure, but REALLY, really good. Add it to your shopping list for your next trip!

re: Alcachofa
I recently had a pumpkin whoopie pie from, of all places, Berkeley Perk Cafe, and was shocked! It was better even than my beloved Verrill Farm.
I also recently had Verrill and Russo's whoopies, and still give Verrill the edge of those two.

Yes, really good. Like a carrot cake, but with less texture and more pumpkin (and pumpkin pie spice). Agreed all around the table tonight to be an excellent pairing with Carmes de Rieussec Sauternes 2006, the el cheapo ($16/375ml) bottling from the famed Rieussec. Tried Carmes de Rieussec at the Blanchard's West Roxbury grand tasting -- another coming in JP on November 4.
