I often think Russo's baked goods and pastries are fine, but not anything particularly special or delicious. My other half brought home a pair of pumpkin whoopie pies the other day, more out of curiosity than anything. Good LORD these were tasty! Huge (one is definitely enough for 2 to share as a hefty dessert), perfectly spiced pumpkin cakes with a cream cheese filling. Decadent, for sure, but REALLY, really good. Add it to your shopping list for your next trip!

WIll have to try that next time -the one at Verrill Farm is small (probably a good thing) and the cake portion is tasty, but it is filled with sickly sweet frosting and no cream cheese is involved.

Had a Pumpkin Whoopie pie at Cafe Escadrille that was also surprisingly good. Tender spice cake with a subtle orange-flavoring in the cream cheese frosting center.

Yes, really good. Like a carrot cake, but with less texture and more pumpkin (and pumpkin pie spice). Agreed all around the table tonight to be an excellent pairing with Carmes de Rieussec Sauternes 2006, the el cheapo ($16/375ml) bottling from the famed Rieussec. Tried Carmes de Rieussec at the Blanchard's West Roxbury grand tasting -- another coming in JP on November 4.

I think the Verrill Farms pumpkin whoopies are better than the otherwise worthwhile Russo's. Not sure if they are still available though; they don't sell them for long.

For the love of God, do not make the mistake I made and eat a whole one after a full dinner. I just ate one, and it's just as described, and probably the best whoopie pie I ever ate. My pairing with this one will be a three-day coma.
