Tons of Error Messages

I've been getting a ridiculous amount of error messages lately, along with crazy-long hang times. I thought this garbage was all fixed?

  1. I am also having that problem, to the point that I just give up and walk away. But you know that is always how it goes, when they make major improvements (restaurants) then it takes a while to work the bugs out. Sort of like getting a brand new OS for you computer. It has great bells and whistles, but lots of bugs at first, and then come the updates. I'm sure they must be working on it.

    1. I'm having the same problems. It took way too long for this reply window to open, for instance. I just haven't been spending as much time on the site lately because it's so frustrating.

      1. It's that and more. This morning I tried repeatedly to reply to a post and was sent back to my posts every time. Not any other time I replied to a post; just this specific one...
It was like I had been blocked on that one. Moderators: are you gaslighting me?

        1. re: Scargod

I don't know what gaslighting means, so I'm pretty sure we're not doing it.

The moderators are volunteers who don't manage the technical aspects of the site, so unfortunately, they can't do anything to fix the problems, and they're suffering through them along with everyone else (possibly more than everyone else, since they spend a lot of time here).

I asked, here, regarding the new restaurant section, how best to communicate issues: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/655808#5074218

Does the technical side of things belong here? http://chowhound.chow.com/boards/40
I have overlooked the sticky at the top of this (Site Talk), board, till now. It did not jump out at me.
I don't want to muddy the water on a thread or pile stuff onto you where it does not belong. I'm just looking for some direction, if I am to help. If I am allowed to work on the beta stuff where do my comments belong?
If I want to report bugs in the places software is that a diferent place than site functionality problems which I consider Technical issues? Like this thread, it seems many of us are dropping our complaints all over the place and also creating many new threads for complaints. I know this is the best solution. What about emailing technical support?

Gaslighting: from the old movie, "Gaslight", where, from the film's title, "gaslighting" acquired the meaning of ruthlessly manipulating an individual, for nefarious reasons, into believing something other than the truth. IE, Driving someone intentionally mad.

            1. re: Scargod

Technical problems are best reported on the Technical Help board, but we'll see them either way.

Usually when an active Beta is happening, the invitation will tell you where feedback needs to be sent -- there was a separate forum for the Places beta, and an email address. One something is on the live site, Technical Help is the best place for it.

              1. re: Jacquilynne

Well, perhaps my misunderstanding, but I thought when we were invited and we accepted by asking to edit Places, where others could not, that it was considered "beta" work. Thanks.
BTW, I appreciate the heroic effort. I used to own a business and I used to like to fine tune things and get max performance out of things. It irks me to see something I have invested heavily in run poorly at times. I have a tendency to want to get under the hood and help.

        2. The newest flaw seems to be unread, new posts automatically expanding even though I haven't read them yet. This makes picking out the new messages quite a pain in the ass.

          1. Here's a list of errors I experienced several times a day yesterday:

            1. Like Scargod when I tried to reply to a post, I was kicked back to my page of previous posts. This occurred at least 4 or 5 times.
            2. I got the general error page (we can call it the CHOW equivalent of the Windows blue screen of death--where nothing is happening.
            3. Overall yesterday, the response time was so slow that I abandoned ship.

I hope the techies figure out what the problem is 'cause it's definitely turning me off (and possibly other users away).

            1. re: Gigi007

As Jacquilynne said, we should be posting these on the "Technical Help" board, not here. Let's not diminish our voice by sharing our problems here . Now that I know, I will post all site problems there.
BTW, earlier, when someone said "expanded" I thought of screen size, not viewing all posts or viewing all text. A week ago the "expanding" of the page on the screen and resultant small text was a problem.

              1. re: Scargod

I must have missed Jacquilynne's comments. And just like you and some other hounds, I wanted to express the frustration I have been experiencing with the problems on the site, and not only the technical problesms themselves. Last but not least, if it's not OK to post here I would think that Jacquilynne or someone else on the CH team would lock the thread and direct people to this thread (where I've now posted) or another one if it is more appropriate: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/65654. Otherwise, people will and should free to post here.

                1. re: Gigi007

I'm not going to move or lock this thread, because it serves as a useful notice to people reading Site Talk that we're aware of the problems and now also directs them over to Technical Help where more discussions are happening, but it really would be best if people reported their problems on Technical Help, rather than on Site Talk.

                  1. re: Jacquilynne

Thanks, Jacquilynne. That's exactly what I was thinking. when I first posted here. I've also posted the specific issues mentioned on the Technical Help Board.

Btw, I'm having fewer issues today compared with yesterday.
