Waterfall on Atlantic-

Does anyone know what happened to Wafa at Waterfall? There are new owners. No more Wafa and her incredible mother in the kitchen. One difference which is actually better is that they are making their own pita bread. I always thought their pita bread was not on par with the rest of their food. Anyway does anyone know where they went or why?

  1. I heard just that she sold the restaurant and that the new owner is Egyptian. The food was still good the last time I got take out and the fresh baked pita is an excellent addition. Friends have seen Wafa around the neighborhood recently, perhaps someone has heard from her.

      funny, there are many threads here about Wafa's, a middle-eastern restaurant that opened a few months (a year?) ago in Forest Hills...and the only complaint is the pita bread isn't up to par. Did Forest Hills' Wafa come from Waterfall?

        Waterfall had a large table (as always) at the Atlantic Antic & Wafa was behind it. I told her that there was a rumor that she sold the place and she laughed and said "I'm still here".

      2. Wa(ter)Fa(ll)? Anyway, maybe Wafa opened the Forest Hills place when she left Waterfalls, I don't know. I saw her in Waterfalls last month and said hello, but I guess she was just looking in.

        Anyway, I've just been back after too long a time (moved out of the neighborhood), and yes, while the menu remains much the same, the cooking has changed. To tell the truth, I think Waterfalls has gotten even better. Apart from the fresh-made pita, the salad is now a proper salad with lettuce and bits of tomato as before, but also some sliced black olives, onion, bell pepper, and feta cheese, and maybe a light dressing. The strongest flavor in the chicken shawarma used to be charcoal-broiled, very tasty, but now it's an excellent spice/herb mix (not spicy, flavorful), and the chicken is moister. (I saw a trace of the mix in the salad, maybe that's what I tasted.) There's less salmon on the salmon platter than before, one fillet instead of two, but again the charcoal-broiled flavoring isn't there and instead the fish is well seasoned. Have to check out some more dishes and see if there are more good surprises.

          Waterfalls was great before the switch. I didn't really know the owners, as some on this board undoubtedly did, so when I went there the last two times I noticed something was afoot strictly from the food. The menu has actually changed -- they've added Pitza, for example -- although most of the old option are still available.

          And, as for the quality, I couldn't agree with Armagnac more: the shawarma I had on my first post-Wafa trip was in a totally different style than I had come to expect and much more intricately spiced than before. I thought it was an upgrade. I hadn't had the merguez sausage prepared by Waterfalls previous owners, but it was also great, with just the right amount of heat and lamb-y goodness. And the pita and salads are clearly a cut above than before.

          So, in sum, a good place actually got better.

            I was in there the other day and saw Wafa's mom in the kitchen, cooking away. I think she's been there all along.

              Re: adding pizza to the menu. I remember calling them a few years ago when the take-out menu I had listed pizza. I started placing my order for one of them when she interrupted me and said, "If we didn't have pizza, what would want?" Classic!

          2. It's a different restaurant now. Wafa's mother is still around, but the menu is definitely different. While I appreciate the small touches (homemade bread, non-dry schwarma), some of our old standbys don't transition well with the new management.
            It's hard to lose your go-to dish of string beans and buttery rice (so says the wife).
