Breaking the Fast at Highland Kitchen - with gusto!

Met some friends at HK last night to break my Yom Kippur fast. Wow - could not have picked a better place.

After I guzzled two huge glasses of water and we all had adult beverages we started with the special appetizer of buffalo fried brussel sprouts. Yes, you read that right. Brussel sprouts dipped in batter,deep fried and tossed in buffalo sauce. Served with a side of blue cheese dressing. Holy wow. So good. The sprouts were perfectly cooked - bright green, crisp and surprisingly well-suited to the flavors of buffalo sauce and blue cheese.

I moved on from there to the fried chicken dinner (remember, I had just fasted people!). I don't eat fried chicken more than once or twice a year b/c it's usually just not worth it. This was. The chicken was amazing and all the sides - collard greens cooked with copious amounts of pork, mashed potatoes with gravy and a biscuit. Wow - the perfect way to end the holiday. My leftover chicken made for a delicious lunch AND dinner tonight.

Just another reminder of why I'm so happy this place is just up the road from my 'hood.

    That's exactly the same delicious meal I had on Monday night!

      Since the Monday night fried chicken thing isn't on their menu online, how much is the dinner?

        It rang in around $12.95 if i recall correctly.

          That's the other thing about this place - their prices are so reasonable. $12.95 is correct and for that I was essentially served an entire chicken plus sides.

        Conversely I had a shockingly overcooked burger there last night. I realise I risk chow-consternation by admitting that I asked for "medium", but in other places around town that gets me something pink and juicy. This was dried out and actually burned on the outside. It went down like a brick.

        On the other hand my DC had the chiles rellenos which were good, though we thought expensive for what they were.
