Hi! I am looking for a place to celebrate my upcoming birthday. It needs to be affordable, quiet enough to have a conversation, and somewhere on the east side of LA (downtown, los feliz, silverlake, pasadena, etc.) I've seen similar posts on the board, but they seem to focus on westside bars, which are too far of drive for me! Other than that, I'm just looking for a good place to hang out with friends. Thanks so much!

I personally wouldn't go as far afield as Pasadena for a drinkery. Edendale Grill is nice, if a little narrow and staid. I'm a big fan of Good Luck Bar on Hillhurst. Get there a little early to score a cozy corner couch situation. I think they open at 8, but it doesn't start to get loud and crowded until 10:30-11.

quiet bar? hmm that sounds like an oxymoron...I'd say downtown - golden gopher or broadway bar...lucky baldwins in pas (really this is a beer place). Also, I think I was able to have a conversation at York in Highland Park
