Galatoire's Friday Lunch....Not Quite

One of our planned highlights for this past weekend was lunch at Galatoire's. So on Friday morning, the four of us got all gussied up and walked over to Glatoire's to stand in line. We arrived at the front door at 10:30 a.m. I found it odd that there was only one couple in line and figured something had to be wrong. We walked into the lobby and the maître d’ was standing at his lectern with a most disapproving look on his face. I told him we'd like a have lunch for four, and he then informed me that there were no tables left until the 3:00 p.m. seating as people had been in line for the first seating since 8:00 in the morning!! All I could respond with was "WHAT?? 8:00 a.m??" He said, "Yes ma’am, I gave away our last table at 9:45." And with that, we were outside Galatoire's at 10:30 in the morning literally all dressed up and nowhere to go. We stood around and laughed for a minute over the idea of standing in line at 8:00 a.m. for lunch, but then began to wonder where to go. Somehow I remembered that August was offering lunch on Friday, too. I gave them a ring and they had ample seating. We had an 11:30 reservation just like that. We were pretty amazed at how quickly our plans changed.
We arrived at 11:05, and even though we were 25 minutes early they seated us anyway. We had an amazing lunch with fabulous champagne and wine. The lunch menu was pre fixe. For appetizers, we had the gnocchi with crab and truffles. It just literally melted in your mouth…to die for flavors. And I'd love to know how they manage to execute the mozzarella salad with the tomato in the mozzarella balloon. It was simply amazing. Theree out of four of us had speckled trout with hollandaise, and it was nothing short of perfection.
Everyone was so gracious and accommodating knowing we had a bit of a rocky start to the day - they even ran to Luke to get some fresh oysters for us so we could enjoy them with our champagne.
After two bottles of Taittinger, two bottles of Adelsheim Pinot Noir and a lunch that is destine to become legendary in our vacation conversations, we left the restaurant at 2:30 in the afternoon. It turned out to be the best event of our trip!
