El Jíbaro, Eche pa Echarle and other hole-in-wall Peruvians in north end?

We were walking past the Peruvian restaurant El Jíbaro on St-Hubert just north of Jean-Talon the other day - they have become a byow, so we had visions of some good Peruvian seafood and a good white wine. Across the street, there is another unassuming Peruvian restaurant, Eche pa Echarle.

We remember El Jíbaro as very good from a previous incarnation when it was located at the corner of St-Dominique and Gounod, also in Villeray but in a more out-of-the-way location. A nice family place. But that was almost 10 years ago, and restaurants can decline - or improve - in a far shorter time. Any info about these two or any other Peruvian - or other Latin-American, for that matter, in the area? (Villeray - Petite-Patrie). In general these are of the hole-in-wall variety and mostly target their own national communities.

El Jíbaro:
comida peruana especialidades en pescados y mariscos, 7183, rue St-Hubers 514.948.4827

Eche Pa Echarle
7216, rue St-Hubert 514.276.3243

Both of these are very close to the Jean-Talon métro - closest exit rue St-Hubert (farthest east).

  1. There's Solymar, also on St-Hubert St.
Great Peruvian food, it is not a BYOW though.

We went to Solymar a while ago and thought it was okay, but not great. Melchorita is still my top Peruvian place in Montreal. Doesn't Solymar have some scheme where they sell wine for SAQ price + $5?

    2. Precision: I remember Eche pa' echarle being on St-Dominique and Gounod before it moved to its St-Hubert in 1997-1998. The photos of Luis Eche holding the huge fish in his St-Hubert restaurant were taken there. Melchorita subsequently opened on Gounod around 1998.

I have definitely eaten (happily) at the original Eche at the corner of St-Dominique and Gounod. Would be very interested in knowing more about the Solymar wine scheme.
