I am a foodie from New York City who plans to be in Amsterdam for about 4 days in October.

My preference on short trips like these is to eat local food exclusively. I would also like to try the cuisine of the Surinamese immigrant population.

Street food, fine dining, or beverages.

ALL suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

things that come to mind:

an afternoon of beertasting at Brouwerij 't IJ
http://www.brouwerijhetij.nl/
(note their unusual opening hours)

sampling jenevers and Dutch liqueurs at Proeflokaal Wijnand Fockink
http://www.wynand-fockink.nl/

Broodje kroket and/or broodje halfom (liver/beef) at Van Dobben
http://www.vandobben.nl/

Broodje pom at any Surinamese toko

Fries at Vleminckx
http://www.amsterdamlogue.com/best-french-fries-in-amsterdam.html

Broodje haring from any of the herringstands

A warm fresh 'stroopwafel' from the little cart at the Albert Cuyp market
A fresh stroopwafel (less traditional but equally delicious) from bakery Lanskroon, Singel 385

The december pastries may just have arrived when you're here, get speculaas or gevulde speculaas (speculaas with almond filling) from a good bakery like Lanskroon, Bakken met Passie, Simon Meijssen.

If you're here on a saturday, go the farmersmarket at Noordermarkt. A great place to sample Dutch cheeses. And while you're there get some fresh applepie at cafe Winkel, on the corner of Noordermarkt. Some say it's the best in the city, I don;t know about that, bit it's pretty good.. mostly because they have such a high turnover, and the pie is always really fresh.

Indonesian: in general, I feel that the take out you can get at an Indonesian toko is much better than the Indonesian food at sit down restaurants. But I've heard good things about relative newcomer Blauw
http://www.restaurantblauw.nl/, haven't been there myself yet.

For a nice lunch in the city center, I like Gartine:
http://www.gartine.nl/
They grow most of their produce in their own vegetable garden outside Amsterdam (although maybe not so much in October!) and I love their pastries.

I just spent 3 weeks in the US and I guess I was more homesick for Dutch food than I thought ;)
