Cyrus or Meadowood?

fbchase Sep 28, 2009 12:13 PM

Hey -- we are going to be in Calistoga for our first anniversary. We want to do a big splurge dinner and were wondering if we would be better off at Meadowood or Cyrus?

Thanks for any feedback.

Cyrus is an excellent choice! We definitely had our best meal to date there. Service was impeccable without being stuffy and the food was amazing. I have never dined at Meadowood, although I have been there for a wedding and the grounds are lovely.

Only problem is that it is quite far from Calistoga. I wouldn't want to drive over the mountain after a celebratory dinner. Why aren't you staying in Healdsburg?

Well there not in Healdsburg, Calistoga is great but I would choose Meadowood. Great setting with excellent food and much easier and safer drive than to Healdsburg.

I didn't even think of the point they are not in Healdsburg! I agree that Meadowood is definitely a better choice if you are staying in Calistoga.

Thanks for all of the advice. The hotel told me that the drive isn't that bad if you take 128 -- they said about 30 minutes and not very much of it is goat-path-like. So I'm hearing that it's actually a pretty bad drive from Calistoga to Healdsburg? That's really useful to know.

Is Meadowood as good as Cyrus?

              IMO Yes!

It's not a bad drive under normal circumstances, but the road is single lane, and windy, and it will be night time. Plus if you want to enjoy the wine (I thought the wine pairings were amazing, and well worth it), then ride back at night isn't the safest thing to do. My meal at Meadowood wasn't as good as my meal at Cyrus, but it was comparable. Plus the stretch of the Silverado Trail from Calistoga to St.Helena is probably the nicest part of the whole trail.

Haven't eaten at Meadowwood but if I would have to pick the most dispappointing restaurant experience of this year it would be clearly Cyrus. Very disappointing service. They clearly showed us at the beginning that they believed because my wife and I were the youngest in the restaurant that we don't have any clue about upscale restaurant and treated us that way. In addition, compared to some of other favorite restaurants like Providence, Spago etc. the food wasn't even close to a two Michelin star level.

Cyrus is very good, but for many reasons, Meadowood is a better choice for you.

First, as others have pointed out, it's a very long drive from Calistoga to Healdsburg.

But even if they were equidistant, I would choose Meadowood. Was there last spring with wife and in-laws, and we ordered the tasting menu, and two of us the wine pairings. The food was dazzling, with no stumbles and many very brilliant courses. (We all rated the dinner as equal to French Laundry and 11 Madison in Manhattan.) Wine pairings were terrific.

That said, wife and I liked Cyrus a lot and would be happy to return. And our dinner there was several years ago, so the Meadowood buzz is closer. I think you would be very happy with either.
