  1. it's quite small and cozy (so not sure how intimate vs loud your party wants to be). I didn't love it, but my partner did and to their credit, even the chef came out because she noticed i didnt eat much of my meal - but it was totally an issue of me not ordering the right thing. I think generally i have heard the food is excellent so it depends what ambiance you want. there are so many fun places on smith for after dinner that i'm sure you'll have a great time.

It's been there for a very long time. It's great!!

Went 2-3 years ago and it was fantastic. Been meaning to go back.

    2. In my opinion, the Grocery has been the best restaurant in that neighborhood for years. Sometimes I change my mind and think Saul is better, but either way you will enjoy yourself.

The Grocery pays attention to tiny little details that I really like. The food is consistently good and the room is pleasantly small.

      1. thanks all - so I'll try to make a resey, but if I can't get one, I'll probably try out Frankie's 457 - i love their olive oil but have never been to the restaurant!

I think Grocery is the best restaurant in Brooklyn for it's type of food....

Frankie's does not take reservations. Waits are very long during prime dining windows. Very good food and wine program. Well-priced. I kinda dislike the staff though.

Frankie's food is really great, but yes, recently the waits have been up to 2 1/2 hours, whereas a year or two ago that was unheard of. You are also the first person to feel the same way about the staff as I do. Even after going once or twice a month at least for 2 years, they were always cold and offputting. Prime meats is my new go to place, staff is amazing.

Lotsa complaints about the staff at Frankie's. There was a post on the Boerum Hill egroup (I think) reporting that she and her (older) friends were unceremoniously hustled out the door the second they finished eating.

          2. I went there for my husband's birthday dinner about a year ago--it wasn't very memorable of a meal, I didn't even really enjoy my dish and for the life of me can't remember what I even ordered. The space itself felt a little stuffy, and the service a little too attentive to feel comfortable. I felt overall like the room had a "hushed" feel, and was ready to leave about ten minutes into our meal.

I kind of feel like some of the restaurants on Smith get over-talked. Chestnut, for example, which I found to be nothing short of terrible after hearing so many good things.

            I like Applewood (Park Slope).

I couldnt agree more with you about chestnut - was shocked after trying it out after all the reviews. All in all though, i think there's great food in carroll gardens.

Funny. I've always had outstanding meals at Chestnut. But then again, tastes vary. You liked Little D back in February. I thought it was overpriced with boring food.
