Though it will be just approaching dinner time in our systems, we expect to arrive at the place we're staying on E. 60th near 2nd--assuming our flight from San Francisco is uneventful--close to midnight EDT.

In years past, we would have just headed for the Stage Deli then called it a night.

It's been quite a while and we're out of touch. Any thoughts on where we might get a satisfying, aha we're in New York, not too huge meal without having to travel as far as, say, Chinatown?.

Since Katz's closes so early (I've always liked my deli late at night), it's out of the running, though we will probably try to get there before we continue on to Europe Saturday.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Closer to UWS and Midtown:

Landmarc (Tribeca and Time Warner Center locations)
Dinner daily: 4pm-2am

Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill (Columbus Circle)
Daily: 5pm to 2am

Sushi Seki
Mon-Sat: 5:30pm-3am

Tsukushi
Monday to Friday: 6PM to 2:30 AM. Saturday: 6PM to 12AM. Closed Sunday.

The hours I listed might be off, since they're from the web... I would also call beforehand to make sure the kitchen isn't planning on closing early that night (due to lack of traffic), which can happen sometimes.

This list is still fairly accurate:

With the exception of Talbot's push cart (gone) and Momofuku Ssam Bar now serves a light bar snack menu (pork buns, pickles, peanuts) Sun-Thurs from midnight-2am, no hot food.

For your late-at-night deli fix, I suggest you look no further than Sarge's, on 3rd Av., b/t 36th & 37th Sts. Open 24/7. (If you're too tired to go out, they deliver all over Manhattan.) The pastrami is first-rate! A different style from Katz's but, imo, just as delicious. Be sure to ask for it fatty. Very good coleslaw as well. The wait staff will give you that "Aha! We're in NY!" feeling you crave. Not that they're in any way surly -- just a bunch of NY characters. :)
