Coi or Ritz Carlton Dining Room for Special Dinner?

I think I have narrowed down a special birthday dinner (for 2) to either Coi or the Dining Room at the Ritz. I have not been to Coi, but we love the Ritz - the grandeur, intimacy and of course, the food. I'm curious to hear thoughts on which you'd choose....or, am I missing an option I should be considering?

If the person you are taking hasn't been to the Ritz, I think you should take him/her there. It's an SF experience that everyone should try once. I took my sisters when they graduated from college. It was their first tasting menu experience. They loved everything about it, felt pampered and loved, and like they had finally "arrived," you know? Plus the staff always does something special if you let them know it's a special occasion, like fancy writing on a plate of food or something else sentimental.

I think it is a matter of personal preference. The food at Coi is lighter and edgier than the Ritz. The dining room is more modern.

Between the two, I'd go to the Ritz. My last two meals at Coi had way too many mis-steps. Also, because it is special, you want it to feel special and there is no way to get beyond the fact that in Coi, you feel like you are in a cave.
