As fall approaches, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for good places to go pumpkin picking. Ideally this place would also have a little homemade pumpkin pie stand, farmer's market, etc.

It's a pretty big operation, so it might not qualify as homey. But I picked pumpkins at Underwood Farms in Moorpark a couple years ago.

Underwood is fun with lots of stuff for kids. They also have a tasty mini-doughnut and home made potato chip stand, though the rest of the food is pretty unexceptional.

We go to the Cal Poly Pumpkin Festival every year. It is open for only two days each year. This year the Festival will be on October 17 & 18, 2009, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

The students use to grow the pumpkins on the hill there but in recent years they seem to be trucked in and placed all over the hill. It still makes a great backdrop for photos. They have a very large farmer’s market style food section with some pretty good food and live music They have a petting zoo and I think they still have the pony rides by the Farm Store. That Farm Store is a cool place to shop and they sell the giant pumpkins there also which makes the store another good place for photos with those large pumpkins and farm tractors… Oh, parking and admission to the pumpkin patch is free but there will be a walk from the parking lot across the street to the Festival, so maybe bring a wagon (most people do) to hall the pumpkins back to your car.
