Poppy?

In October, I'll be visiting Seattle for the first time. Due to other commitments, we only have one night for dining out. We would like to go a restaurant specializing in the best of pacific northwest cuisine.

Since I enjoy cooking out of one of Jerry Traunfeld’s cookbooks (The Herbal Kitchen: Cooking with Fragrance and Flavor), I was thinking of making a reservation at Poppy. I’ve seen a few positive references to Poppy in other threads. Since the menu seems to be designed around the thali, I’m a little concerned since Indian food isn’t one of my travelling companion’s favorites.

Do you think we would be better off somewhere like Crush? Canlis? Lark?

Canlis is a better choice for the best PNW cuisine and the location, view, ease of parking, service, decor can't be beat. Poppy is good...but more trendy, casual, and indian-flavor influenced.

I really enjoyed Crush- It is a great Seattle restaurant. That would be my recommendation based on your post.

Poppy is very, very loosely based around Indian flavor profiles. It is much more about highlighting fresh Pacific Northwest flavors. If your dining partner is put off by Indian food's spiciness or the heaviness of curries, then this is definitely not a problem in that Poppy is generally not spicy and is very light. However, if your dining partner doesn't like certain flavors like cardamom or coriander, then that may be an issue. Still, I highly recommend Poppy.

          It is not indian food.
          You should go.
