In Boston I used to eat at a place called Singh's Roti Shop, where I would get a huge roti, filled with chicken curry, various vegetable salads, hot sauce, etc....

Living in California, there wasn't very much Caribbean food, and now that I'm in London, I'd like to find something like this again. Where are the best places? Specific recommendations at specific places would be great - i.e. which place is best for mutton curry? which is best for chicken? etc...

I think I spotted some possible places in/near Brixton market....but places in North London would be great too. But if it's the best, I'm willing to travel to get there.

Thanks very much!

I have little experience of eating Caribbean food in North London, but you can find it all over London. The best Jamaican stuff I've had in my area is Tasty Jerk and Taste of Jamaica in Croydon or Tickle me in West Norwood. I also really like Jus Spice in Streatham. In Brixton I like D's Roti hut, (I'd only order the rotis - the chicken and goat are both good') or a little further afield there's the Trini Roti Hut in Herne Hill.

Sorry if this is no good for you seeing as you're near Turnpike Lane, but I'll consult some mates about the options near you.

I felt it was somewhat comparable to Singh's for roti (good not great), although the recommendations seem to be for the doubles.

Have to say again in defence of Roti Joupa's roti, it is sensational when it is freshly cooked but you have to beg, cajole, wait

Oh my, Roti Joupa was good, VERY good!! So much so it was a bit of an embarassment when I tried to reciprocate by introducing my Trinidadian friend (big Roti Joupa fan) to Sedap's Singaporean-style roti prata.

OK, nothing special though to be honest.. Fine if you want some thing quick and cheap.

The samosas etc are heated in the microwave so they are a bit soggy..

there are two great places on Turnpike Lane:

Pimento Grove - 29 Westbury avenue - just by the Tube station - this is an eat in and take away place and everything ive tried has been good

there is also a very small take away just off of Turnpike Lane - i think on Alexandra Road or Burghley - again very good and really cheap
