I'd strongly recommend skipping Vaccaro's and going for Piedigrotta for desserts. There's just no comparison.

          Piedigrotta is awesome, but
          1) Vaccaros has better cannolis.
          2) Piedigrotta closes at 6 and Vaccaros is open until much later (especially on Friday/Sat)

It sounds like Cianghiale is the perfect choice here. Fantastic wine/food, special occasion atmosphere, fun new neighborhood. If you want to travel for dessert, I'd walk to Vaccaros for cannoli or Pitango for gelato.

Getting away from the Italian theme you might try a restaurant called B on Bolton Hill not far from Hopkins, great food, ambiance and service. It's a comfortable non-commercial place.

Attmans Deli, for the best corned beef sandwiches, Sotto Sopra for a great Italian meal, Lexington Market, for berger cookies, and Faidleys Crab cakes, Miss Shirleys Cafe for brunch.

For Italian with a wine list, Cinghiale is the best you will find. The best bang for your buck with a small but great wine list (and a few great beers on tap) is at Peter's Inn. Their food is continually the best I have had in Baltimore and your daughter will be very impressed that you know about such a place. The staff/owners are great and treat you like a neighbor.

            Did you know....

that the baker who is sometimes credited with inventing Tiramisu (!) in Italy back in 1969 lives and bakes in Baltimore? I've never been to his place, but on the website there is an announcement about serving lunch and dinner. See link below.

I have only been for lunch, but the food is very, very good. Not much atmosphere -- a few tables is all in front of the bakery cases, but really quite good, particularly the desserts.

Cinghiale is IMHO hands-down the best Italian wine list in Baltimore. It's in Harbor East, a stone's throw from Fell's Point.

Second Cinghiale -- by far the best Italian list. I believe that Gia's just got a liquor license, but it is a totally different place (smaller, homier, less fancy but certainly tasty) and there's just no way they can match Cinghiale for breadth or depth.

As to Lexington Market vs. Reading Market, it is true that Lex is no match for Reading, although it is an "only in Baltimore" experience that has some great and unique food e.g. Faidley's raw bar and crabcakes. But if you did not want to go to a city market and nonetheless wanted somehting distinctively Baltimore, I would suggest Attman's, a few blocks east of downtown, for lunch. Great, great corned beef, pastrami and other (Jewish) delicatessan faves.

I live in Fells Point and came to Baltimore for college as well. My parents did consume plenty of wine over the few years that they helped put us twins through college! They continue to visit and everytime we visit new restaurants. There are several great restaurants in Little Italy. You could try Gia's. Adorable restaurant, authentic Italian owner and delicious food. My sister and I had our birthday there. Great food and drinks! The owner and her mother are absolutely terrific!
For some other options, you can try Henninger's or Peters on Ann Street. Both have excellent food and wine! Enjoy!

Thanks for the reply.....funny you should mention Gia's, that is where we went last year(this is our daughters second year in Baltimore). We had a lovely time and our daughter has been back several times. Great to see you and your sister remained in Baltimore. When I come to town I LOVE IT! Again thanks for the advice.
